<p>Provided are a foreign matter detection device and a foreign matter detection method that are able to accurately determine the presence of metal foreign matter even if a metal portion is provided ahead of time to a scanning subject sample. Specifically, the foreign matter detection device (5) has: a magnetic sensor (10) that detects the magnetic characteristics of a banknote (2) carried into a detection area (40); and a foreign matter presence determination unit (81) that determines whether or not metal foreign matter is contained in the banknote (2) on the basis of the output from the magnetic sensor (10). The foreign matter presence determination unit (81) has: a verification data storage unit (83) that stores verification data output from the magnetic sensor (10) when the banknote (2) does not contain foreign matter; and a data comparison unit (82) that determines the presence of foreign matter by comparing the verification data and the output from when the magnetic characteristics of the banknote (2) currently carried in have been detected by the magnetic sensor (10).</p> |
