A stereoscopic device (13) for recapturing light is provided. A chassis (30a-d) is open on front (35) and back (36) sides and forms a rectangular housing with top, bottom, and two sides that frame the front (35) and back (36) openings. A polarizing beam splitter (31) is angled away from the back (36) opening of the chassis (30a-d) and captively held by the chassis (30a-d). The beam splitter (31) is constructed of substantially orthogonally polarizing material. A phase shifting optic (32) having a reflective surface coated by a phase shifting film is angled toward the front (35) opening, wherein the beam splitter (31) and phase shifting optic (32) are in optical alignment with each other within the chassis (30a-d), so as to split the light into two separate light beams that each provide a separate, but similar, stereoscopic image that is displayed on a polarization- preserving screen. A modulator (21) sized to cover the front (35) opening is positioned in front of the chassis (30a-d). |
