PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failure generated in a system producing an electric field in a combustion chamber.SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine of an embodiment in which plasma is produced in a combustion chamber by interaction of an electric field radiated into the combustion chamber through an antenna facing the combustion chamber of a cylinder, and a spark discharge generated between a central electrode of an ignition plug and a ground electrode to ignite an air-fuel mixture, a magnitude of reflection wave measured in radiating the electric field from the antenna in fuel cut, and a magnitude of reflection wave measured in radiating the electric field from the antenna before execution of fuel cut or after termination of the fuel cut are compared. When the former is larger than the latter by a prescribed value or more, it is determined that a system is not failed, otherwise it is determined that a certain failure is generated in the system. |
