The present invention provides a medium processing device and a medium transaction device which can increase reliability. Specifically, an automated teller machine is provided with a paper currency deposit/withdrawal unit which dispenses paper currency to a conveyance unit and accumulates paper currency conveyed from the conveyance unit, a differentiation unit which is provided upon the conveyance unit and identifies serial numbers as identification characters added to the paper currency, and a control unit which changes the conveyance destination of the paper currency depending on whether or not identification of the serial number on the paper currency by the differentiation unit is possible.
