In a master oscillator plus power amplifier (MOPA) system (10), the oscillator is a passively Q-switched laser (12). The laser is triggered into passively Q-switched operation by operating an optical switch (40) to resonantly couple back into the laser amplified stimulated emission generated by the amplifier (30). The oscillator comprises a passive Q-switch (20), for example CnYAG, and a gain element (22), for example Nd:YV04. The oscillator is end-pumped by a pulsed LD (14). The amplifier (30) is end-pumped by a LD (34) in a cw-mode. Seeding of the oscillator with ASE emitted by the amplifier is controlled by the optical switch (40) which may comprise a Pockels-cell (42) between two polarizers (44,46). Control of the pulse repetition rate and the duration of pulse bursts emitted by the MOPA is possible via the control of the ASE seeding the passively Q-switched oscillator. |
