<p>In order to download a video item available in plural quality versions, the available bandwidth and the maximum buffer size of the play-out buffer (301) is estimated. In a buffering state (201, 221), the play-out buffer (301) is filled up to a first predetermined fill level (75 Mb) that approximates the maximum buffer size by requesting video segments in a first quality version whose corresponding first play-out bitrate is below the available bandwidth. In a steady state (202, 222), further video segments are requested in a second quality version with corresponding second play-out bitrate that is higher than the first play-out bitrate and possibly higher than the available bandwidth. As soon as the buffer fill level drops below a second predetermined fill level (15 Mb), further video segments are again requested in the first quality version to fill the play-out buffer (301) again up to the first predetermined fill level (75 Mb).</p> |
