A protective grille (40) for a cricket helmet, includes a framework of curved horizontal (22-25) and vertical bars (27-30) for protecting the face of a helmet wearer. At least two of the curved bars have the same radius of curvature, and preferably form geodesics on the surface of a notional sphere, providing optimal impact resistance from all frontal directions. The grille may have side-plates (20) which have bolt holes (21) for mounting onto a helmet. There are preferably three main horizontal bars (22-24) which are geodesic in configuration and a fourth, bottom horizontal bar (25) which shares the same radius of curvature of the three main bars but is non-geodesic. Three of the horizontal bars (22, 24, 25) may be welded to the side-plates (20) and a fourth may be welded (33) to one of the others (25). Four vertical bars (27-30) may be welded to join the horizontal bars. The grille may include a hinge so the user can move it away from his face. |
