A damage limitation approach comprises determining that a voltage produced by a rectifier circuit 110 is indicative of a fault and consequently controlling a switch 123 operable to bypass a resistive element 120 of a circuit via which the rectifier circuit is supplied. Resistor 120 can form a soft start circuit 118 passing current between a source and the rectifier and be bypassed by a relay 123, which at the time of a fault can either be closed to cause an upstream overcurrent protection device to act or opened to limit current. The voltage can be detected at an output of the rectifier, and indicate a fault when: it is less than an undervoltage damage threshold or greater than an overvoltage damage threshold; when it has passed one of these thresholds for a time period; or its rate of change is less or more than predetermined rates. Rectifier 110 can be a capacitive voltage multiplier, or a voltage doubler and the damage limitation can be controlled by microprocessor 140. |
