A method of electrodepositing a metal on an electrically conductive particulate substrate is described. The method comprises the steps of: (i) providing a cathode 6; (ii) providing an anode 3 formed from the metal to be electrodeposited; (iii) providing the substrate 8, cathode 6 and anode 3 within an electrodeposition bath comprising an electrolyte; and (iv) providing a voltage between said anode 3 and cathode 6 causing metal ions to flow from the anode 3 to the cathode 6. A separator 9 may be located between the anode 3 and cathode 6 where the separator 9 may be a semipermeable membrane 5 or an organic liquid phase (Figure 3). The phase may be created through being immiscible with an aqueous electrolyte so that a biphasic system is created. The substrate 8 may be a nano-sized carbon particulate that can be provided with a metallic coating. The electrodeposited layer may comprise a ferromagnetic metal and a magnet (figure 3, 46) may be used to capture the metal coated particle from the electrodeposition bath. Agitation means may be provided in the form of an ultrasound probe 12. |
