A series of extraction pulses are applied to an acceleration electrode in order to accelerate consecutive groups of ions into a time of flight (TOF) analyser. A high frequency rate of extraction pulse is used to improve the TOF analyser duty cycle that causes fast ions from one group of ions overtaking slower ions introduced in a preceding group. In particular, ions having a relatively high mass to charge ratio in a preceding group of ions arrive at the TOF detector after ions having a relatively low mass to charge ratio in a subsequent group of ions. An extraction pulses frequency is determined that will avoid coincidence of ions from consecutive groups of ions at the ion detector. |
