An active noise system, a controller 523 for an active noise system, a method and a hybrid electric vehicle 100; wherein the controller is arranged to control the active noise system to generate noise when the internal combustion engine 200 is not active whilst the vehicle is in motion or at a standstill. The active noise system may be configured to detect noise generated by the ICE using a microphone 525 and modify the exhaust noise, either by cancelling or enhancing the sound, based on ICE operating conditions such as engine speed or torque using a loudspeaker 524. The active noise system may generate noise when the ICE is inactive depending on vehicle operating parameters such as vehicle speed or accelerator pedal position. Artificial noise may be generated when the vehicle is stationary or in motion under electric power. Standstill may refer to an eco-stop vehicle mode or an electrically driven, intent to move mode. The generated noise may be similar to that of the vehicle ICE or ICE exhaust system 511. |
