A method for increasing tolerance to abiotic stress and/or reducing the consequence of abiotic stress in a plant and/or part thereof, and/or seed comprising: contacting a whole plant and/or attached part thereof, and/or seed with a composition comprising an effective amount of at least one dicarboxylic acid or salt thereof, or any combination thereof, wherein the dicarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of undecanedioic acid (HOOC—(CH2)9—COOH), dodecanedioic acid (HOOC—(CH2)10—COOH), brassylic acid (tridecanedioic acid, HOOC—(CH2)11—COOH), thapsic acid (hexadecanedioic acid, HOOC—(CH2)14—COOH), tetradecanedioic acid (HOOC—(CH2)12—COOH), and pentadecanedioic acid (HOOC—(CH2)13—COOH), thereby increasing tolerance to abiotic stress and/or reducing the consequence of abiotic stress in said plant and/or plant part, and/or seed.
