[Classes 2 (iii).and 15 (ii)] Monoazo dyes are obtained in substance or on the fibre by coupling a diazotized 4-amino-N- substituted phenylsulphonamide of the general formula shown in Fig. 1, wherein X represents alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy, Y represents H and R 1 and R 2 represent the same or different alkyl or aryl groups, with an arylamide of a polynuclear o-hydroxycarboxylic acid. The sulphonamides are obtainable as described in Specification 546,301. Examples relate to the production on cotton yarn of the dyestuffs, (1) 3-methoxy-4-aminophenylsulphon-dibutylamide # Naphthol AS/TR (the 4<SP>1</SP>-chloro-2<SP>1</SP>- methyl-anilide of 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid), (2) 3-methyl - 4 - aminophenylsulphon - ethyl - anilide # Naphthol AS/OL (the 2<SP>1</SP>-anisidide of 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid).
