摘要 A method for optimizing resource allocation for signal conditioning of DSL or other signal lines includes developing a signal quality metric using crosstalk interference and, optionally, signal to noise level. Use of existing pilot tone training selectively assigned to signal lines allows determination of the signal quality metric. A threshold level is selected and all signal lines having a signal quality metric above the threshold level are assigned crosstalk cancellation resources. Because the total number of signal lines requiring crosstalk cancellation is not known at the beginning, a particular threshold level may result in allocation of more than the available resources or allocation of significantly less than the available resources. When this happens the threshold level may be adjusted and the process repeated until crosstalk cancellation resources are assigned up to a usable limit.

A method, in a signal interface, of assigning crosstalk cancellation resources to signal lines, the method comprising: calculating, in the signal interface, signal quality metrics for a plurality of signal lines, wherein each of the signal quality metrics is indicative of crosstalk interference on a respective one of the plurality of signal lines; setting, in the signal interface, a threshold level; allocating, in the signal interface, crosstalk cancellation resources to one or more signal lines in the plurality of signal lines, wherein allocating crosstalk cancellation resources to one or more signal lines includes allocating, to each signal line for which the respective signal quality metric meets the threshold level, a respective crosstalk cancellation resource; determining, in the signal interface, a total amount of crosstalk cancellation resources allocated to the plurality of signal lines; determining, in the signal interface, whether the total amount of crosstalk cancellation resources allocated is within a target range; and when the total amount of crosstalk cancellation resources allocated is not within the target range, adjusting, in the signal interface, the threshold level to either reduce or increase a number of signal lines, within the plurality of signal lines, to which the crosstalk cancellation resources will be allocated.
