[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Angular bending; coiling: In an apparatus for winding a wire or other filament on a rotating body such as a reinforcing wire on a tube or cylinder comprising a brake member rotated by the filament as it passes from a supply, a brake, a second member supported for rising and falling movements by the bight of the filament in its passage from the brake to the body and a connection between the second member and the brake for adjusting the latter as the second member rises or falls to adjust the braking effort so as to counteract tension variations as described in the parent Specification, the lugs or flanges on rings on the cylinder &c. between which the wire is wound, are turned down over the windings by a pressure member during rotation of the body, means being provided for displacing the member to an inoperative position. The cylinder 7 may be provided with a pair of rings 62, 63 having flanges 621, 631, the flange 621 being provided with lugs 65, 65a for securing respectively the initial and final ends of the wire. The cylinder is rotated between chucks on a lathe bed and the wire 25 is led from a supply 24 over a brake drum 39 under a jockey pulley 40 on a weighted lever 47, over idle pulley 41 to the cylinder, these parts being mounted on a saddle 2 traversed by a lead screw. The brake lever 54 which is weighted and is pivoted at 55 and connected at 53, 55 to the ends of the brake band, carries a cam 71 co-operating with a roller 581 on the lever 47 as described in Specification 548,482. The wire is guided on to the cylinder by a roller 66 spring mounted in a slotted block 83 carried by a bracket 81 provided on the tool rest 3. To the block 83 are welded a pair of members 93 carrying a spindle 94 on which is pivoted by means of slots a pair of arms 91 connected by a bridge piece 92 and carrying a semi-circular roller 95. The arms contain springs which press against the spindle 94 so that the roller 95 is resiliently mounted. Normally the arms are swung on the pivot 94 out of contact with the cylinder so that the roller 66 engages the work. When the flanges &c. are to be bent over, the rest 3 is retracted by operating a handle 69 and the arms 91 are swung down on their pivot 94 into the position shown in Fig. 3 in which they rest on the top of the block 83. By traversing the rest 3 sideways either by a handle or by traversing the saddle the flanges 62, 63 may in turn be bent over the windings. The lugs 65, 65a may be separately bent over by a hammer, the lug 65 immediately after hooking the initial end of the wire thereover. Specification 544,952 also is referred to.
