The method involves communicating a suction tract (1) and an exhaust gas tract (4) of an internal combustion engine with a combustion chamber (9) depending on the switching position of the gas inlet valve (12) or a gas outlet valve (13). The suction tract has a suction pipe (7) and a throttle flap (5) and a load sensor. The exhaust gas tract has a lambda probe and actual values of a load variable are determined by the load sensor and estimates of the load values are modelled based on a suction pipe model. A fault of the suction tract is identified depending on the smoothing function. An independent claim is also included for a device for the operation of an internal combustion engine. |
