The present invention provides a battery cell in which an electrode assembly having a structure in which a separating membrane is interposed between an anode and a cathode is provided in a battery case, the battery cell being characterized by comprising: a battery case which includes an upper case and a lower case, and in which an accommodation portion for mounting an electrode assembly in the upper case and/or the lower case is formed; and an electrode assembly in which a plurality of electrodes or unit cells are stacked vertically with respect to a plane, and at least two of the electrodes or unit cells have different plane sizes from each other, wherein the accommodation portion of the battery case has a stair-like stepped portion therein which corresponds to the shape of an outer surface of the electrode assembly.
