[Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A hose pipe is made by wrapping about a former a compound sheet material formed from an open-work fabric of ramie, linen, flax or cotton having.a layer of rubber on each face, the layers having been squeezed together so that they unite through the interstices of the fabric. The composite fabric may be formed so that a marginal portion of fabric extends beyond the rubber layers. The weft yarns of the fabric may be stronger than the warp yarns. In a modification the fabric may be close-woven and provided with holes. As shown in Fig. 7, the fabric 7, covered on one side with a layer 6 of closely woven fabric or paper, is wrapped round a former 8 and a marginally extending layer 4 of uncoated fabric is folded round the outside, the raw edge being covered by rubber tape 11 and the whole is vulcanized, for example in a circular section pipe-like former by means of steam. The composite fabric may be made by passing a fabric 12 between a lower roll 14 and an adjustable heated upper roll 13 at which rubber 15 is supplied from a hopper 16 to form a layer 19. After passing round a drum 20 a layer 21 of rubber is similarly applied to the other side of the fabric by roll 13<SP>1</SP>, the pressure of rolls 131, 141 causing the layers 19, 21 of rubber to unite.
