PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a processor and an automated system which reduce the time-consuming work steps in processing on a histological sample.SOLUTION: The automated system comprises: a. a plurality of holding arrangements which are sized and shaped to hold a plurality of tissue cassettes in a single plane; b. a handling device disposed to transfer the holding arrangements within and between a processing area and an embedding area; c. the processing area including a plurality of retorts and a plurality of reagent containers, in which each retort is independently in fluid communication with a reagent container; d. the embedding area including a dispenser for dispensing embedding material and a cooling unit; and e. a controller in communication with the handling device. The controller receives protocol information and instructs the handling device to transport each carrier to the processing area and embedding area on the basis of the protocol information.
