PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel liquid crystal optical element.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal optical element includes: a first substrate; a laminate structure of a first electrode layer and an inclined cross section structure layer, arranged above the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer arranged above the laminate structure; a second electrode layer arranged above the liquid crystal layer; a second substrate arranged above the second electrode layer; and a protrusion layer having a plurality of projection parts functioning as a spacer maintaining a cell thickness. The protrusion layer is formed on a side of the second substrate as a laminate structure of the second electrode layer and the protrusion layer, and both of the first substrate and the second substrate are film substrates. Alternatively, the protrusion layer is formed on a side of the first substrate as a laminate structure of the first electrode layer, the inclined cross section structure layer and the protrusion layer, and at least the first substrate is a film substrate. |
