Disclosed is a pair of obstetric forceps (10). The disclosure notes that obstetric forceps can injure both a baby and/or mother if excessive pulling force is applied. The present obstetric forceps (10) provide user feedback of the force applied therefore reducing harm to the mother and/or baby. The pair of obstetric forceps (10) comprises a pair of blades (14a, 14b), a handle (18), a mechanically operated force indicator (52) and a mechanically operated disabling device. The pair of blades (14a, 14b) are located at a first end (12) for holding the head of a baby. The handle (18) is located at a second end (16) having at least one part by which a user can apply a pulling force on the head of the baby when in use. The mechanically operated force indicator (52) is connected to the at least one part of the handle (18). The mechanically operated force indicator (52) is operable to provide a visual indication of the amount of pulling force being applied to the head of the baby when a user applies a pulling force on the head of the baby. The force indicator (52) is responsive to an increase in pulling force only and automatically records a maximum pulling force applied. The mechanically operated disabling device is operable to at least partially disable the obstetric forceps (10) when a maximum pulling force has been exceeded. |
