The invention relates to a device and method for the automated inspection of the geometric rolling parameters of the wheels of rolling stock travelling on a track, using computer vision techniques. The invention uses a structured light source (10) which illuminates a light line (12) over a fraction of the rotating surface (3) of a wheel (1); a camera (20) which captures an image (21) of the illuminated zone; and a data processing system which records, digitalises, geometrically corrects and reconstructs the information from the contour of the rotating surface (3) not recorded in the image (21), thereby providing a digital description of the complete cross-section profile of the wheel (1) which is represented by means of a reconstructed profile diagram (500) in order to calculate the geometric parameters of the wheel (1).
