PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium which is suppressed in long-term deterioration of contrast and has a wide operational range.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal medium contains at least one of compounds of formula (I) and at least one of compounds of formula (II) and is based on a mixture of polar compounds having a negative dielectric anisotropy.
