The invention relates to an internal combustion engine, comprising a four-stroke internal combustion engine, a fresh gas line and an exhaust gas line, wherein for a cylinder of the internal combustion engine the supply of fresh gas is controlled by means of an inlet valve, and the discharge of exhaust gas by means of an outlet valve, wherein outlet actuation means are provided which open the outlet valve during an exhaust stroke, and wherein inlet actuation means are provided, which open the inlet valve during a suction stroke and during the exhaust stroke. The internal combustion engine is characterized by phase-shifting means for the phase-shifting of the opening of the outlet valve by the outlet actuation means during the exhaust stroke. This embodiment allows for adjusting the opening of the outlet valve as far back to early opening that a phase of an overpressure in the exhaust gas line, as compared to the pressure in the fresh gas line, overlaps with the opening of the inlet valve during the exhaust stroke. |
