An image display device according to an embodiment of the present invention is provided with: a light source unit; one or more reflective type light modulating elements; an optical system; and a light shielding plate. The light source unit includes at least one or more laser light sources. The one or more reflective type light modulating elements modulate and reflect light incident thereto. The optical system splits the light from the light source unit into a plurality of light divisions, and these divisions are each superimposed and made incident to one or more reflective type light modulating elements. The light shielding plate is disposed within the optical system, and has opening units disposed on each of the pathways for the plurality of light divisions and shielding units that shield light reflected toward the light source unit from the reflective type light modulating elements.
