The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine, comprising the steps: generating a plurality of sparks to ignite a fuel-air-mixture in at least one combustion chamber by means of an ignition device of the internal combustion engine, determining at least on combustion duration (tF1) of at least one of the sparks, recording a deviation of an actual operation from a target operation of the internal combustion engine at least in dependence on the at least one combustion duration (tF1), and compensating for the deviation by carrying out at least one measure which influences the combustion of the fuel-air-mixture in the at least one combustion chamber, wherein identifying the at least one combustion duration (tF1) of the chronological first of the sparks, allocating the first spark to a first spark type or a second spark type in dependence on the at least one identified combustion duration (tF1) and carrying out the at least one measure if at least one value (30) characterizing a frequency of the spark types exceeds a threshold value. |
