PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas purification catalyst capable of achieving both improvement in heat resistance by coating rhodium with alumina and suppression of the solid solution of the rhodium into the alumina, and to provide a method for efficiently purifying exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine using the catalyst.SOLUTION: There is provided an exhaust gas purification catalyst which contains rhodium coated with alumina containing at least lanthanum.
