PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for converting acetolactate to 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate by using a microbial host cell having highly active ketol acid reductoisomerase (KARI).SOLUTION: A method for converting acetolactate to dihydroxyisovalerate comprises the steps of: (a) providing a microbial host cell containing a gene construct encoding a polypeptide that includes a ketol acid reductoisomerase of which specific activity is higher than that of E. coli's ketol acid reductoisomerase; and (b) bringing the host cell in (a) in contact with acetolactate to generate 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate.
