PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an LED light bulb as bright as an incandescent light bulb.SOLUTION: A light emitting diode (LED) light bulb 100-a includes a base and at least one support structure 113a coupled to the base. The support structure 113a is formed into a shape that defines contours for a luminous surface 112-a and an open volume. The LED light bulb 100-a includes at least one LED assembly 120-a comprising two or more electrically connected LEDs 121-a. The LED assembly 120-a is attached to and in physical contact with the support structure 113a along a length of the support structure 113a to form the luminous surface. The support structure 113a has openings between neighboring segments of the LED assembly 120-a.
