The present invention relates to a device including a destructive mass detector, which comprises a computer processor arranged to execute a computer program for controlling the processing of a first sample, wherein the computer processor of the chromatograph is arranged to acquire measurement values from the destructive mass detector originating from a measurement of the inserted sample. The measurement values so acquired comprise detector response values attributed to mass/charge-intervals (m/z) and to measuring-steps of the first sample. A predetermined number of the highest detector response values measured within an individual mass/charge-interval (m/z) is selected during the insertion of the first sample, and an effective response value (mwm/z) is generated based on said number of detector response values for that individual mass/charge-interval (m/z). Finally, the results are presented as appropriate for the intended use. The invention also relates to a method of using the device as well as to software designed to control the operation of the device in an analytical process.
