Disclosed is a diagnostic system for a vehicle including a stop-start system for a starting period and a method thereof. At least one diagnostic test is performed before stopping an internal combustion engine by the operation of a stop-start system. The diagnostic tests can completely run. When the diagnostic test indicates a failure of the starter motor or a solenoid, the stop-start operation is stopped. The system uses a sensor to determine whether a starter shaft rotates when the shaft is in a position where a gear on the shaft is released from a coupling. The operability of the starter motor is checked by determining whether the shaft rotates after powering the motor without coupling the motor to the gear and depowering the motor. When The operability of the solenoid is checked by powering the solenoid to move the shaft in a position where the sensor cannot detect the rotation of the shaft′s rotation after the rotation of the starter shaft is detected. |
