The vacuum pump has an assignment unit for assigning the balancing state for the position of a rotor (20), such that a balancing unit is adjusted to meet the change in the balancing state. The bearings (44,50) are provided for supporting the rotor. A sensor unit is provided for detecting the balancing state of the rotor and for interacting with an evaluation unit (134). The evaluation unit is designed to detect the change in the balance state. The bearings are comprised of the active magnetic radial bearings. An independent claim is included for a method for balancing a rotor of a vacuum pump.
