Vulcanized rubber is reclaimed by treating it in a finely-divided state with about 4 per cent of an aromatic compound having at least one hydroxyl group directly attached to a polycyclic nucleus, or of a ketonic isomer of such a body, at a temperature of 120-170 DEG C. and preferably at 140-170 DEG C., in an autoclave or digester, for a period of 1 to 3 hours. Specified compounds are a - and b - naphthols and anthrone. The heat treatment, which may comprise a warming-up stage of half an hour, a period of two hours at the maximum desired temperature followed by a cooling period of half an hour, is preferably followed by mechanical working on a roller mill. The second Provisional Specification also describes the addition of volatile solvents such as xylene to the mixture.
|
