The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for recognizing detected characters and, more specifically, to an apparatus and a method for recognizing characters to improve recognition rates by syntagmatically executing a character separation algorithm and a character recognition algorithm which are executed to recognize the characters. The method for recognizing characters recognizes the characters from a detected character image. The method comprises a step of setting a window having a predetermined size and of generating scan characters by scanning the window within a character image; a step of determining the scan characters having a value, which is more than a threshold value, as a plurality of character candidate areas by comparing a feature value of the whole character learning image with the characteristics of the scan characters; a step of classifying character candidate areas having the value, which is more than the threshold value, into character areas by comparing the characteristic value of an individual character learning image with an individual characteristic value of the character candidate area; and a step of outputting a final character from the character areas. |
