The invention relates to a method for producing an m-substituted alkyl toluene of formula (I), R1 being C1-C5-alkyl, characterized in that a p-substituted alkyl toluene of formula (II), where R1 has the meaning indicated in formula (I), is isomerized in the presence of ionic liquids, forming an m-substituted alkyl toluene of formula (I). The m-substituted alkyl toluene obtainable according to the invention is a starting compound for producing fragrances and flavorings.
