The present disclosure relates to a method for recognizing a gesture in a portable terminal. According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for recognizing a gesture includes receiving a first gesture by a user and receiving a second gesture through a sensor, with a distance from the surface of a portable terminal; and differently recognizing the gestures according to a time difference (T) between the reception of the first and the second gesture if the first and the second gesture are in opposite directions. Furthermore, other embodiments are possible. According to various embodiments of the present disclosure, a gesture by a user received through a proximity sensor can be recognized more clearly and variously.
