PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical device capable of illuminating with a high luminance light in a wide color gamut by efficiently combining a beam of light including blue light, green light, and red light from a light source and a beam of light from a solid-state light source which emits red light of high color purity.SOLUTION: The illumination optical device and the projection type display device including the illumination optical device include: a first light source (first light source 39); a second light source (semiconductor laser 60); a first illumination unit (first illumination optical system 42); and a second illumination unit (second illumination unit 65). The second illumination unit (second illumination unit 65) is disposed adjacent to a plane on which an image of a first light source is formed on a light path of the first illumination unit (first illumination optical system 42). |
