PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium transport device capable of simply performing the replacing work of a medium separation roller without requiring a large installation space.SOLUTION: A printer 1 comprises: a first medium transport passage 12 for transporting a sheet-shaped medium; a second medium transport passage 29 capable of switching into an open state to transport the medium; a medium transport roller 17 and a medium separation roller 16 arranged to face each other across the first medium transport passage 12; and a roller installation part 70, on which the medium separation roller 16 is removably mounted from the side of the second medium transport passage 29. The retard roller 16 can be replaced from the second medium transport passage 29 in the open state so that the replacing work is easy. As compared with the case, in which the first medium transport passage 12 is equipped with an opening or the like for replacing the medium separation roller, the installation space for the opening or the like to replace the medium separation roller can be reduced.
