PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handheld work apparatus having a tensioning device for a chain which facilitates the tensioning and replacing of the chain.SOLUTION: There is provided a handheld work apparatus having a guide rail (8) with a periphery along which a tool formed as a chain (9) runs. The work apparatus has a casing (2) and a fixing arrangement (12) for fixing the guide rail (8) to the casing (2). The fixing arrangement (12) has an actuating device (19) which is actuated to fix the guide rail (8) in a fixing direction (76). The work apparatus has a tensioning device (13) for the chain (9). The tensioning device (13) includes a tensioning spring (14). When the tensioning device (13) loosens the fixing arrangement (12), the tensioning spring (14) exerts a force on the guide rail (8) in a tensioning direction (15) of the chain (9). When in operative connection with the actuating device (19) during actuation of the actuating device (19) in the fixing direction (76), the tensioning spring (14) is tensioned.
