[Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group III] In the removal of organic sulphur compounds from town gas or other fuel gas by catalytic conversion of the sulphur to hydrogen sulphide, the catalyst, a metallic thiomolybdate, is formed in situ by the action of the sulphur compound on a metallic molybdate at an elevated temperature ; the hydrogen sulphide produced being absorbed by hydrated iron oxide in the usual manner. The molybdates used may be iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc or tin molybdate and may be supported on some inert material such as granular bauxite. The hydrogen sulphide initially present in the gas need not be removed before treatment. The temperature range preferred is 350‹ C.-500‹ C.
