Catalysts For Forming Diethyl Ether

A process is disclosed for producing of diethyl ether by dehydrating ethanol in the presence of an inventive catalyst. A preferred catalyst achieves high conversions of ethanol and high selectivites to diethyl ether. The diethyl ether may be used as a solvent, fuel additive, or fuel.

dehydrating ethanol in the vapor phase at a pressure and a temperature in the presence of a catalyst to form diethyl ether, the catalyst comprising tin impregnated on a solid catalyst material selected from the group consisting of titania, zeolite, phosphotungstate and hydrotalcite.
