a coil apparatus asymmetric with respect to a main pole and configured to generate more magnetic flux on one side of the main pole than magnetic flux on other side of the main pole; the coil apparatus comprising: a helical coil wrapped around the main pole, and a pancake coil positioned between the main pole and a return pole and wherein at least part of the pancake coil is located, in a down track direction, between the return pole and the helical coil.
