A method and apparatus are provided for recovering audio packet location fields and/or frame boundary information from a received digital radio broadcast signal frame in which there are detected errors in the signal frame header by using selected header elements and/or protocol data unit (PDU) structured data block parameters relating to minimum, maximum, and average packet length or PDU length in a scalable recovery process that may be throttled dynamically or configured statically based on available computation resources within a specific implementation and/or at a specific time.

1. A processor-implemented method for processing a composite digital radio broadcast signal to recover audio transport elements, comprising:
receiving a composite digital radio broadcast signal comprising one or more protocol data units (PDUs) transported together in a single transfer frame; detecting a header decoding failure in a first header portion of a first PDU; and identifying valid and invalid audio packet location fields in the first header portion of the first PDU using specified PDU length and packet length parameters for the first PDU to compute and correct audio packet location fields based on an expected placement of each extracted audio packet location field in the first header portion of the first PDU and one or more structural statistics for the first PDU.
