Methods of preparing compounds according to Formula (I):;;and salts thereof as well as their corresponding phosphine intermediates are provided herein, wherein R1 and R2 are different and each of R1 and R2 is independently selected from an organic radical that branches at the alpha carbon and an organic radical that branches at the beta carbon, and each of X and Y is independently O or S, and wherein said compound is a liquid at room temperature.

A method for preparing a secondary phosphine according to formula (II):the method comprising allowing a primary phosphine of formula R1PH2 to react with i) an olefin of formula CH2═CR3R4 under free radical conditions, or ii) with an olefin of formula HR5C═CR3R6 in the presence of an acid catalyst,wherein
R1 is a hydrocarbyl group containing a total of from 5 to 16 carbon atoms; R2 is different from R1 and is chosen from (a) —CH2—CHR3R4 when the primary phosphine is reacted with CH2═CR3R4; or (b) —CR3(CH2R5)R6 when the primary phosphine is reacted with HR5C═CR3R6, wherein
R3 is methyl or ethyl;R4 is alkyl;R5 is H or alkyl; andR6 is alkyl; orR5, R6 and the carbon atoms to which they are bonded form a five or six-membered optionally substituted cycloalkyl ring.
