<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provideα-amylase derived from Bacillus subtilis (AmyE) and variants thereof as an improved process for producing industrial products from starch, and to provide a method for using the amylase in starch liquefaction and/or saccharization, or in detergent compositions.SOLUTION: Provided is a polypeptide variant having at least one altered property that improvesα-amylase activity and enzyme performance, where the variant has an amino acid sequence of at least 92% identity to a parentalα-amylase selected from AmyE and truncated AmyE variants, and has a performance index (PI) greater than 1 for at least one altered property that improves enzyme performance. The amylase can be used at low pH, in the absence of calcium, and/or in the absence of a glucoamylase.</p> |
