New techniques for establishing communications connections for computer peripheral devices are provided. In some aspects, new forms of audio-jack-connecting peripheral devices are disclosed, which permit the continued use of the phone jack of a PDA for purposes other than communication with the peripheral device. In other aspects, a new technique for rapidly establishing a uniform, secure wireless peripheral device network is provided. In some embodiments of the invention, the secure peripheral device network is activated by physical docking and/or interlocking, without any use of a wired network connection, based on precise proximity and location information. In other embodiments, a secure, encrypted peripheral device network is established by a system in response to terminating a wired network connection, easing the transition from wired to wireless connection status, and easing the creation of a wireless network, generally. |

1. A peripheral device for extending the capabilities of a computer hardware system, comprising: at least two housing sections that each substantially flush-mount with the housing of a PDA or other computer hardware system, with a least some curved and beveled edges at interfaces between the peripheral device and the housing of the PDA, and in which one section comprising the majority of the volume of the peripheral device abuts and substantially flush mounts on the back side of the PDA (opposite a viewing screen), and in which another section abuts and substantially flush mounts on the top side of the PDA with aid of at least some pressure or guidance from a mounting pin or strip that interfaces with an Audio Jack or from another port, jack or side of the PDA, and which communicates with the PDA, extending its capabilities, through an Audio Jack or other communications port, yet maintains access to said Audio Jack or other communications port for additional peripheral devices. |
