DNS WILDCARD BEACONING TO DETERMINE CLIENT LOCATION AND RESOLVER LOAD FOR GLOBAL TRAFFIC LOAD BALANCING A computer-implemented method comprises: a beacon resolver receiving, from one or more local domain name servers, a plurality domain name resolution requests, each domain name resolution request of the plurality of domain name resolution requests comprising a globally unique hostname, each domain name resolution request of the plurality of domain name resolution requests associated with an internet address of the local domain name server that sent the domain name resolution request; in response to receiving each domain name resolution request of the plurality of domain name resolution requests, the beacon resolver: recording an association between at least a portion of the globally unique hostname of the domain name resolution request and the internet address associated with the local domain name server that sent the domain name resolution request; and sending an internet address of a web beacon server to the local domain name server that sent the domain name resolution request; the web beacon server receiving, from one or more clients, a plurality of web beacon requests, each web beacon request of the plurality of web beacon requests comprising a globally unique hostname, each web beacon request of the plurality of web beacon requests associated with an internet address of the client that sent the web beacon request; in response to receiving each web beacon request of the plurality of web beacon requests, the web beacon server: recording an association between at least a portion of the globally unique hostname of the web beacon request and the internet address associated with the client that sent the web beacon request; and sending the web beacon to the client that sent the web beacon request; the beacon resolver providing the associations recorded in response to receiving the plurality of domain name resolution requests to an aggregation server; and the web beacon server providing the associations record in response to receiving of the plurality of web beacon requests to the aggregation server.
