[Class 87 (ii)] The uncured belt B, Fig. 4, is disposed around the upstanding tongue 12 of a base ring 14, an outer ring 26 is forced down over the outside of the belt, and another base ring 10 is disposed over the belt, as shown the ring 10 and tongue 12 having complementary wedge surfaces 12b, 12c. The rings 14, 10 are then forced together by screw bolts or in a press, whereupon the belt takes the shape of the reduced cavity formed by the inner ring surfaces, the rubber in the belt being forced outwardly. Excess rubber escapes through two very narrow channels 30, 32 and by adjusting the width of these channels the pressure on the rubber can be regulated ; the total width can be regulated by vertically adjusting a ring 29 forming the upper edge of the tongue 12, and the total width can be apportioned between the two channels by vertically adjusting a ring 26a on the base of the ring 26. There may be several sets of superposed rings 10, 14, as in the modification shown in Fig. 3, in which the rings 14 are, in effect, divided into two parts 60, 64. End plates 50, 52 complete the assembly.
