PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cyclic aromatic compounds from halogenated diphenyl compounds with a high yield and high purity not only by using polar solvents but also by using nonpolar solvents.SOLUTION: A cyclic aromatic compound represented by the specified general formula (2) is produced from a halogenated diphenyl compound represented by the specified general formula (1) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst, by a dehydrohalogenation reaction using 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undeca-7-ene (DBU) and/or 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]nona-5-ene (DBN) as a base.
