575,400. Boat lowering gear. WELINMAcLACHLAN DAVITS, Ltd., and HOWARD, W. L. March 15, 1944, No. 4853. [Class 115] A device whereby the lowering of a boat 19 from a winch 28 on a ship's deck is controlled by an operator on the boat, comprises a U-shaped bracket 3 secured to a bottom block 18 or other part of the boat and carrying a freely mounted drum 5 rotatable by a hand wheel 7 and provided with a brake drum 6 controlled by a lever 9. A flexible steel wire 13 is wound round the drum 5 and passes over sheaves 22-35 to a leyer 26 which actuates the main lowering brake 27 of the winch 28. The boat 19 can therefore be lowered by turning the hand wheel 7, sufficient friction being applied to the brake drum 6 by the lever 9 to maintain the required tension in the rope 13 necessary to keep the winch brake 27 open. When the boat is lowered from the ship's deck, the rope is prevented from becoming slack by friction imposed on the brake drum 6 by an adjustable spring 15 or by a counterweight on the lever 9. |
